Aug 01 2012 At our work carbide inserts is the go for the automated cnc lathes etc indexable inserts easy to change and set back up for intricute shapes when cutting we will sometimes grind our own HSS toolsteel on a tool and cutter grinder for drilling its always HSS and HSS coated drills very rarely use solid carbide drills.

Dec 16 2015 As for carbide vs HSS when milling in nonproduction environments I dont see much difference. Carbide will flex less but chip a LOT easier. It holds an edge better but costs a lot more. Its a balance for sure. When milling RPMS are much slower than with a router. I cant help you with what carbide or HHS will work better at 25krpm or faster.

Aug 28 2003 Is a Knee Mill or MillDrill better for gunsmithing and to make a receiver. I have an 07 FFL to gunsmith and make guns but cant decide which mill is better. The Knee mill has higher spindle speeds which I thought would make milling the steels used in firearms more difficult. The milldrill is less rigid but has a slower spindle speed.

Mar 27 2020 Get a 38 4 flute carbide endmill and do some work on those vise jaws.once you indicate the vise in.so the fixed jaw is dead nuts on the X-axis grab a few short parallels and clamp them in the vise. Then come in and mill a small step.I like about 14 deep by 0.040 in the vise jaws.

May 13 2009 I only use carbide mills on steel never on aluminum. Inserted endmills 1 dia and larger should have R8 shanks. A cutter 1 12 in diameter is almost to big for a turret knee mill. But that is only my opinion. When milling with carbide inserted endmills my depth of cut is limited to.030 to.050 per pass in a light turret knee mill.
